Since receiving its first Best Fishfinder Award from the NMEA in 1971, FURUNO has won annual awards in various categories every year. The mission of the NMEA is to contribute to development and popularization of the marine electronics industry. The association also sets standards for electronic interfaces for navigation equipment, communication protocols, and other aspects of marine electronics.

Since 1971, FURUNO has had the privilege of winning 176 NMEA awards, which is more than any two other manufacturers combined. In 2006, a new category was added for Manufacturer of the Year - Support and FURUNO was awarded this prestigious title, an honor which Furuno was awarded again in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The NMEA members are comprised of dealers, distributors, industry experts and NMEA-approved technicians, and they each vote for who they feel should win the awards.
